Tasting - Crane Lake Riesling

Name: Crane Lake Riesling
Variety: Riesling
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95
Shop Review: "Punchy lime and lemon mark this off-dry Riesling with a staccato rhythm, adding edge to honeyed tones of peach and honeysuckle. Exceptionally priced, it's satisfying and elegant."
My Review: In the bottle, its color was pale yellow. Unfortunately I couldn't assess its smell while in the glass because there was still some red leftover from the previous wine. What I could make it was that it seemed extremely fruity. It hit the tongue with a bang, bringing in tons of sweetness and refreshing notes of florals. This wine was crisp and enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Crane Lake Petite Sirah

Name: Crane Lake Petite Sirah
Variety: Petite Sirah
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95
Shop Review: "Shows a certain rustic simplicity now, with youthfully jammy flavors of blackberries, cherries and currants, sprinkled with cocoa and pepper and wrapped into dusty tannins."
My Review: Compared to the other reds during this tasting, the Petite Sirah was more purple-y reddish in color. It smelled warm and full-bodied. Its taste definitely agreed with its scent, because it was hearty in flavor, with hints of vanilla in the background. It was good, but also dry. There was no aftertaste which I liked. Overall, this wine was pretty good. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Yellowtail Reserve Merlot

Name: Yellowtail Reserve Merlot
Variety: Merlot
Region: South Eastern
Country: Australia
Year: 2010
Price: $12.00
Shop Review: "Round, velvety and mouthfilling, this is a satisfying Merlot at a bargain price. Aromas of black cherries and herbs fold in hints of cinnamon and mocha, while the flavors are generally fruity, but with a slightly tomatoey note. Soft on the finish. Drink now."
My Review: The Merlot was almost brown, a very burgundy-looking red. It smelled good, a grape-y scent of medium body. It tasted like fresh grapes, like a red grape smoothie that I had in a restaurant in the Philippines once. It was not bitter, it was not acidic, and I really liked it. I might buy a bottle of this for myself sometime or ask a salesman to direct me towards other similar flavors. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Takutai Pinot Gris

Name: Takutai Pinot Gris
Variety: Pinot Gris
Region: Nelson
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price: $21.00
Shop Review: "Since this wine weights in at 14%, the fruit was clearly very ripe. That ripeness is reflected in the flavors as well, which feature nectarine and honey accented by hints of white pepper. It's full bodied and lush, with a long finish that mingles the sensations of sweet and spicy."
My Review: The color of this wine was even more golden-looking than the last one. It kind of reminded me of pee. It had a strong pear scent, with hints of pineapple and other Dole fruit cup fruits. I really enjoyed the smell of it. It also tasted good, it was both floral and sweet. Would probably drink this wine again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Mars & Venus Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Mars & Venus Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "Citrus and gooseberry aromas are mild but typical of the variety. A basic citrus palate delivers modest tangerine and nectarine flavors which lead to a mild, pithy finish showing light citric notes."
My Review: This wine had a prominent golden color. It smelled fruity, entering my nose with a kick of something sweet that I couldn't quite detect. It was almost as if I was smelling something savory as well in its scent. I thought it tasted great, and I think this is the first Sauvignon Blanc that I actually enjoyed. It was sweet and nice on the tongue. Would definitely drink this wine again! Was not paired with any food.

Dinner - Bull and Bones (USA)

For my final wine and dinner experience, my roommate and I decided to try Bull and Bones Brewhaus and Grill, a newer establishment in Blacksburg located on South Main Street. I had dined there once before, but it was before I turned 21 so I was not able to enjoy the amazing selection of beers or wines quite yet. That's what made this experience different - I realized what a delicious combination it is to pair a great wine with a juicy steak!

We decided to go with two reds and one white wine to accompany our meals that evening. The first red was called The Show Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena winery in Napa Valley, California. It displayed a very dark reddish maroon color in the glass. After swirling it around, releasing its bouquet of scents, I could sense a really nice smell of grapes mixed in with alcohol. When I tasted it, it was oaky and reminded me a little bit of plastic. This wine is full bodied and dense, with an intense grape taste that seems a little bit overwhelming. I wasn't quite a fan of this wine on its own. Although, when I paired it with one of Bull and Bones's most popular dishes, rosemary and garlic cream sauce Tri-Tip medallions, it tasted a lot better. More grape flavor was brought out and the mouthfeel was less dense, making it more enjoyable for me. It went well with the spicy, peppery taste of the steak. I thought it was a great pair!

The next red wine we chose was a Fat Cat Merlot, also from Napa Valley. This red had more of a ruby color that sparkled like a gem in the glass. It smelled buttery to me, that savory smell that I've been experiencing with a lot of red wines that I've tasted lately. Its scent also seemed cool and fresh, something I wouldn't expect from a red wine. The Merlot was medium bodied and light on the tongue. It tasted really good! It was almost sweet, not quite like a Riesling or Moscato, but sweet for a red, with notes of fruits and berries. I really loved this wine. It even went well with the 8oz. Sirloin that I paired it with. The spices from the steak were really brought out by the wine. The combination also increased the flavor of the wine, making it seem bigger and even more delicious.

Lastly, our white wine was a Chateau St. Michelle Riesling from Columbia Valley in Washington. It was golden in color and had a scent that made me think of pears, guava, grapefruit, and stone fruits such as peaches and apricots. It was citrusy with a crisp apple taste, really nice on the mouth. There was no aftertaste which I enjoyed, so I can see myself drinking this wine again. I paired this one with the Steak & Shrimp Pasta, garlic cream sauce covered fettuccine topped with sauteed shrimp and wood-fired tri-tip steak. This was another great combination. Having these together brought out fresh oceanic flavors from the seafood. There was white wine in the pasta sauce already, which went perfectly with the Riesling. All in all, these flavors really complimented each other and worked well together. White wine with seafood is always a great way to go!

Sadly, we were too into taking notes on the wine and hungry at the time that we forgot to take photos of our plates before we devoured them. Here are the only pictures of our food that I was able to capture - the last bite of the sirloin and our yummy dessert.

I really enjoyed doing these wine and dinner pairings. Even though I'll no longer be receiving credit for them, I plan on continuing this tradition for a long time. Learning about all the wines we discuss for this class helps me gain a better understanding of what will pair well together when it comes to food, and I am thankful for the course to teach me that! Maybe I'll even continue writing in this blog about my experiences. Who knows!

Tasting - Opera Prima Pink Moscato

Name: Opera Prima Pink Moscato
Variety: 97% Muscat and 3% Tempranillo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: N/A
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "A blend of Muscat 97% and Tempranillo 3%. This fine sparkling presents an intense aroma of fresh berries and tropical fruits with hints of white flower petals. Delicate bubbles caress the palate offering a silky and pleasant sweetness well balanced by a crisp, refreshing finish. Ideal on its own, as an aperitif or with all types of sweets and desserts. Serve it very cold, between 7 and 9 degrees."
My Review: As soon as the wine was poured in my glass, it looked delightfully bubbly. It smelled strongly of flowers, kind of like potpourri. At the same time it reminded me of pink lemonade and summertime. It was really nice on the tongue, light and refreshingly sweet, delicious. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Cortenova Primitivo

Name: Cortenova Primitivo
Variety: Primitivo
Region: Puglia
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "Dark, ruby-red color with violent highlights. Intense and fragrant bouquet with a rich array of red and black fruit aromas and flavors. Harmonious and velvety on the palate. Great balance and structure. 100% Zinfandel."
My Review: The color was more brown-looking than usual, more burgundy than red. It smelled of berries and buttery goodness. The smell also reminded me of vanilla and oak. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine's scent. It tasted interesting, almost spicy like pepper but reminding me of plastic at the same time. I could drink this wine again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Riebeek Cellars Shiraz

Name: Riebeek Cellars Shiraz
Variety: Shiraz
Region: Swartland
Country: South Africa
Year: 2013
Price: $12.00
Shop Review: "Often referred to as Shiraz Country, the Riebeek Valley is renowned for exceptional Shiraz wines. The Riebeek Shiraz is a lively rich wine, full bodied with a subdued smokiness on the nose and a pallet of ripe fruit and interesting spice."
My Review: This Shiraz smelled wonderful to me. It was deep purple in color and seemed like it would be medium-bodied. It tasted like it had a strong alcohol content; I could not identify any berries, fruitiness, or savory sensations. Overall though, it was a decent tasting wine. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Petrucco Ribolla Gialla

Name: Petrucco Ribolla Gialla
Variety: 100% Ribolla Gialla
Region: Friuli
Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Price: $21.00
Shop Review: "This well-priced Friulano would pair nicely with spicy Indian or Thai food thanks to the creaminess and richness of its mouthfeel. In addition, the wine offers a solid bouquet of peach and melon that would not compete with fragrant ingredients. 100% Ribolla Gialla."
My Review: This wine smelled very citrus-y. Unfortunately I tasted it just after a red wine was in my glass so I could not make out its scent very well. I was also unable to assess its color. From what I could detect in its taste, it was acidic and strong, leaving a burning sensation at the back of my throat. It was also kind of sour. It tasted okay, but this wine was not my favorite. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Le Jade Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Le Jade Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Languedoc
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "Silvery straw color. Lively aromas and flavors of pineapple, yellow apple, melon, and Meyer lemon with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, complex, medium-long finish with notes of lemongrass, pear, and lemon with no tannins and no oak. Bright and crisp with layers of juicy pineapple, pear, lemongrass and ripe melon make this perfect for repeated sipping or enhancing fresh farm to table cookery."
My Review: When I smelled this pale straw-colored wine, it smelled full and dense, leaving behind a mark on my nose. Its scent had a fruity and floral combo. Despite the heaviness of the smell, the taste had a light mouthfeel, but it was not a nice one for me. It left behind a weird taste at the back of my mouth that I didn't really enjoy. This wine didn't do much for me. Was not paired with any food.

Dinner - Palisades (France)

This was my second visit to The Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston, Virginia for their "Wines Around The World" series. Tonight's menu was inspired by France, a country that's famous for their food and wines. The drive was more enjoyable this time because it was still light out, and my roommate and I got to see some spectacular mountain views along the way.
First up on the wine list was Gascogne San de Guilhem, a white wine to be paired with French mussels. The wine was a pale yellow with a zesty, fruit scent. Something peculiar tickled my nose...it almost smelled like gasoline to me. When I tasted it, it was dry at first, but I actually enjoyed the aftertaste. I could detect some floral notes. I thought this wine was okay; it was an interesting experience tasting it. When paired with the mussels that were cooked in white wine, parsley, and shallots, the Gascogne tasted ten times better. It was sweeter and went well with the oceanic taste of the seafood. These two paired deliciously together.

The next wine was a varietal Merlot/Cabernet Domaine de Courteillac. It had a deep red color and thickly coated legs around the glass. I sensed a hint of fruitiness in its scent, but also some oak. Overall, though, the wine honestly smelled like paint to me. It tasted woody, slightly peppery, and seemed to have a high alcohol content. This wine was not for me. Paired with the Hachis Parmentier, France's take on a Shepherd's Pie, I think the wine tasted even worse. It reminded me even more of paint and in a way interfered with the taste of the food, which was really good on its own.

Lastly, we tried a Ventoux Famille Perrin. This red wine was a ruby, candied color. I loved the smell of it - for some reason it smelled like something savory. After several sniffs I felt like I smelled something salty. It just had a really, really nice nose. Then when I tasted it, I couldn't believe that I was tasting buttered popcorn! It took me awhile to figure it out, but that was the saltiness that I was detecting. This wine was light and lifted, and I enjoyed drinking it. I could not make out any fruitiness in its taste, though. We paired this one with Alsatian Pizza, topped with creme fraiche, caramelized onion, and bacon. Tasting them together really didn't change much about the wine for me. It had the same intensity of flavor, and it was still good wine, but I wouldn't say it was the best combination. I preferred the food and wine separately.
Another great dinner experience in the books! Not sure when I'll be back to this restaurant, but I would highly recommend it to others. Someday I plan on returning and trying items from their regular menu. The staff is so kind and the restaurant's ambiance is great. My roommate and I even purchased a bottle of our favorite wine from last week!

My Review: Blush-colored, with a strawberry scent, this wine was very sweet - but it was not overkill. The taste reminded me of candy or even marshmallows. It had a nice, youthful flavor and even finish. It was quite enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Ilurce Tempranillo

Name: Ilurce Tempranillo
Variety: Tempranillo

Shop Review: "Dark purple. Zesty, youthfully medicinal aromas of dark berries, licorice and cracked pepper. Juicy and fresh, with smooth texture and sweet cherry and spice flavors framed by dusty tannins. Finishes with a suggestion of slightly roasted fruits and good clinging persistence. Delivers a lot of power and richness for the money."
My Review: This wine had a brown-looking color, a very dark burgundy. It made a thin coating around the glass when I swirled it. It smelled fruity, like grape juice. Initially the wine tasted sweet, but to me it had a dry finish. It was medium-bodied with what seemed like a strong alcohol content. Wasn't sure how I felt about this wine. Was not paired with any food.

My Review: I really enjoyed this wine! It was a blood red color that had a chocolatey, popcorn kind of smell. Its scent was warm and delightful. The wine was medium bodied, its taste nice and easy on the tongue. It was peppery and had a somewhat salty finish, but it was good. I would love to drink this wine again. My Review: The straw-colored wine had a scent that reminded me of green granny smith apples, with a hint of nose that I could not identify. Its taste was bitter on the tongue with a sour finish. I couldn't make out any specific fruits or floral notes. This wine was not my favorite. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Santa Luz Sauvignon Blanc

Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Valle Central
Country: Chile

Flavors of honeydew, lime and a nice grassiness finish firm, with good backbone. Drink this with salads, shellfish and ceviche."
My Review: This golden colored Sauvignon Blanc smelled strongly of alcohol to me. Initially it tasted dry, but its aftertaste was floral and more enjoyable. I could sense slight hints of apple. I didn't really like this wine and probably wouldn't drink it again. Was not paired with any food.

Dinner - Palisades (Portugal)

Every Wednesday, The Palisades Restaurant hosts a "Wines Around The World" menu series. My roommate and I attended the restaurant's Portugal themed dinner this past week. It was quite an adventure to get to the adorable little establishment located in Eggleston, Virginia...but we made it safe and sound!
We were greeted by friendly faces and seated by who we believed was the owner of the restaurant. The interior was nicely decorated with old-looking bookshelves, antique items, and aged hardwood floors. It was the cutest place. We shared some good conversations with the owner as well as our waiter throughout the meal, which made it a pleasant experience.
On the menu for this particular Wednesday, there were three selections, along with three featured wines that were encouraged to be paired with them. The first was Caldo Verde, Portugal's national dish of soup with potatoes, kale, and chorizo. It's suggested wine pairing was with a Duoro Esteva. The wine had a deep, ruby color and made a thick coating around the glass when I swirled it around. It tasted of sweet grapes and blackberries - a delicious combination. It wasn't too dry nor too sweet and I really enjoyed it. With the Caldo Verde, it tasted a little more sour and acidic. I didn't find it as enjoyable with the food because the fruitiness seemed gone.

Next on the menu was Bacalhau a Bras, another traditional Portuguese dish with trout, potatoes, and farm fresh eggs. It was suggested to be paired with Alvarinho Conde Villar, a sparkling white wine. It looked really bubbly in the little glass, golden-yellow in color. It smelled somewhat clean like fresh soap. I could not detect any fruits or florals in its scent. It tasted like citrus and the aftertaste reminded me of pears. I enjoyed its light bubbly freshness. This wine was even better when paired with the food. More notes of fruits and others flavors came out and it complimented the saltiness of the dish.

Lastly, the third selection was a Shrimp and Chorizo Piri Piri Pizza. The thin slice of pizza had a Piri Piri base along with sauteed shrimp, house-made chorizo, onion, and cilantro on top. This course's suggested wine pairing was with a Duoro Altano, another red wine. Its color was a really deep red - it almost looked black. It had a very fruity aroma of berries. Although, it tasted bland to me. It reminded me of grape juice, and it had an extremely bitter aftertaste. With the pizza it tasted even more bland. It still had that bitter aftertaste and even seemed more acidic. I definitely enjoyed them better separately.

After taking sips and small bites of each pairing, I decided to mix and match a few items and ended up liking them more than the suggested ones. For instance, I enjoyed the Douro Altano much better with the soup than with the pizza. It made the wine taste sweeter and more enjoyable. I also liked the Alvarinho with the soup - it opened up even more fruity tones and tasted delicious.

My roommate and I had a really great experience at The Palisades Restaurant. We enjoyed all of the dishes and found our own personal favorite pairings with the wines offered. My favorite wines were the Douro Esteva and Alvarinho, and I can't even pick a favorite dish because they were all so yummy! We even got to try one of their delicious desserts. We will most definitely be back again soon!

Price: $12.00
Shop Review: "Flora, with tea rose and cherry blossom notes, this balanced Moscato shows flavors of ripe white cherry, candied plum and almond on the smooth finish."
My Review: Moscato was the first type of wine that I recognized the name for and knew I enjoyed. This Californian Moscato did not let me down. It was slightly golden in color, but not a very deep yellow. It smelled floral and fruity at the same time. Its taste was very sweet and flowery, extremely pleasing to the tongue. I also enjoyed the nice aftertaste in its finish. Loved this one! Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Resonata Nero D'Avola

Name: Resonata Nero D'Avola
Variety: Nero d'Avola
Region: Sicily
Country: Italy
Year: 2013
Price: $14.00
Shop Review: "The grapes are soft pressed and the juice is placed in stainless steel along with the skins for a maceration of 8 to 10 days with daily pumping over of the juice to extract more color and sweet tannins. Dense ruby red with violet reflections. Lush and ripe bouquet full of mulberries, blackberries and spice. Harmonious and well balanced with good berry fruit in a spicy background. Excellent with lamb, grilled and barbecued meats, dishes with olives or capers and seasoned cheeses."
My Review: This wine had a deep, red color. It smelled slightly like a forrest, reminding me of berries, but also kind of an acidic scent. It tasted bitter to me at first, but later I thought I noticed notes of something toasted. Don't really know how I felt about this one. Was not paired with any food.

My Review: This Pinot Noir seemed pale in color, rather than a deep red. I could sense hints of vanilla in its scent. It smelled really good to me. Something about its taste reminded me of an oaky, wood flavor. It was slightly sweet, but not overpowering. I really enjoyed this wine! Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Maipe Torrontes

Name: Hugl Gruner Veltliner
Variety: 100% Torrontes
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina

On the palate, it has a beautiful structure and acidity along with fruit flavors and plenty of body. Well balanced, this wine displays a pleasant freshness with citrus notes and a long finish."
My Review: Pale straw in color, this wine's scent was distinctly floral rather than fruity, which is something that I don't usually identify when assessing the smell of white wines. It was a nice smell, but unfortunately the wine tasted bland and had a weird aftertaste. I could not detect any fruits in its flavor, and it really wasn't anything special to me. Probably would not seek to drink this wine again. Was not paired with any food.

My Review: This wine had a very pale, straw-like color. It smelled like citrus to me. Its flavor was very evenly leveled and not overbearing for the palette. It was fruity, tasting like pears, and it was not too sweet, which made it enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.
