Tasting - Hahn Piesporter Michelsberg Riesling

Name: Hahn Piesporter Michelsberg Riesling
Variety: Riesling
Region: Piesport
Country: Germany
Year: N/A
Price: $9.95
Shop Review: "This wine's light, airy mouthfeel belies its sweetness and intensity of flavor. Honeyed pineapple aromas; similar flavors on the palate, adding gentle citrus notes toward the long, sweet finish."
My Review: I couldn't really identify the color of this one since it was in a very tinted green bottle and it mixed with the previous red wine in my glass. I'm assuming it was a pale yellow, like most rieslings. It had a really interesting nose. It smelled like some kind of meat - I immediately thought of pot roast. I've never smelled that in a wine before. Its flavor was light at first, but had a strong floral finish. Overall it tasted interesting, was not my favorite, but I could drink it again and would like to see what cheeses and other foods it would pair nicely with. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Tres Ojos Garnacha Calatayud

Name: Tres Ojos Garnacha Calatayud
Variety: Tempranillo, Garnacha
Region: Calatayud
Country: Spain
Year: 2012
Price: $6.95
Shop Review: "88 points - Robert Parker. The 2012 Tres Ojos Garnacha contains 15% Tempranillo (I wonder why), and unoaked cuvee of 200,000 bottles that matures in vat for at least seven months before bottling. What I tasted was a very honest, fresh and fruit-driven red with aromas of cherries, garrigue and thyme with a medium-bodied palate, some weight and tannins that would do better with food. This is a red that sells for a song."
My Review: I thought this wine was a gorgeous red. It had such a pretty color. It also smelled good, with the presence of that buttery component that I love. It had quite a strong nose, really fragrant, with a nice full and rounded scent reminding me of butter and spices. Sadly, it did not taste like it smelled. It tasted like spices but not in the best way. The flavor was very tannic and not very good to me. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Torre Castillo Cosecha Monastrell

Name: Torre Castillo Cosecha Monastrell
Variety: 100% Monastrell
Region: Jumilla
Country: Spain
Year: 2011
Price: $7.95
Shop Review: "89 points - Stephen Tanzer. 100% Monastrell, aged in American oak for four months. Bright ruby. Powerful, spicy aromas of dark berry preserves and lavender. Fleshy and round on the palate, offering spicy blackberry and blueberry flavors and gaining sweetness with air. Finishes smooth, long and slightly warm."
My Review: Purplish in color, the wine looked light and airy, probably medium-bodied. It smelled very sweet, like candy, then peppery afterwards. It was almost as if it tasted like a weak cabernet with a really dry finish. It wasn't too overpowering, but I think I would prefer it with food rather than on its own. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Chateau Suau Bordeaux Rose

Name: Chateau Suau Bordeaux Rose
Variety: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Region: Bordeaux
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95
Shop Review: "88 points - Stephen Tanzer. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Light, lurid pink. Tangerine, raspberry and white pepper on the fragrant nose. Juicy and focused in the mouth, offering zesty red berry flavors with a refreshingly bitter edge. Closes clean and tight, with lingering spiciness and a touch of orange zest."
My Review: It smelled like a blueberry pie, or some kind of berry compote that tagged along with the smell of a puff pastry crust. It had a pale salmon color, not very pink. Smelled like potpourri and tasted like it too. The taste was stinky, overly floral, and had an acidic aftertaste. It was like an old lady's perfume that she drenched herself in because she could barely smell it. Not my favorite. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Terre di Poggio Laude Pecorino

Name: Terre di Poggio Laude Pecorino
Variety: Pinot noir
Region: Terre di Chieti
Country: Italy
Year: 2013
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "Bright and savory, this floral scented Pecorino offers juicy tropical fruit and lemon drop sensations accented by notes of mint and thyme. THe ripe fruit is balanced by risk acidity that leaves the palate feeling cleansed and refreshed."
My Review: This wine was surprisingly quite greenish in color, almost like a really pale emerald, because it sparkled in the glass. It had a tart but also spicy kind of smell, with the tartness initially on the nose and the spice coming later. Its taste started out sweet, but it had an overall bland mouthfeel with gasoline-ish flavors. Slight zesty notes made it somewhat refreshing, and it had a dry finish. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Peter Mertes Riesling Platinum

Name: Peter Mertes Riesling Platinum
Variety: Riesling
Region: 2013
Country: Rheinhessen
Year: Germany
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "This quality Riesling is crisp, clean and easy drinking. Floral and fruit aromas suggest sweet melon and honey with enough acidity to ensure a beautifully balanced and versatile wine."
My Review: The color of this wine seemed pink but this was probably due to the previous red wine in my glass. It smelled like flowers, lavender specifically. It seemed as if there were a strong alcohol content. There was a nice amount of bubbles - it was only slightly bubbly. I sensed a sort of gasoline aftertaste that was particularly acidic. It was light on the tongue with a slightly weird finish, but it was still pretty good. It was an interesting experience tasting this wine, but I would like to one day try it with food. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Charles Thomas Cotes du Rhone

Name: Charles Thomas Cotes du Rhone
Variety: 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre
Region: Rhone
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre. 56 Ha grown organically since March 2009 (in conversion). Part of the vineyard is plowed with horses. Average age of the vines: 30 years old. Clear ruby wine with overtones of red berry fruits. Round and supple with smooth aftertaste. A good all around red wine for meat courses, poultry and light cheeses. Best drunk now while fresh with good keeping up to 4 years."
My Review: This one was more burgundy in color than the last red wine. It smelled extremely plasticy, but also like buttered toast, cloves, and cinnamon. It was dry on the tongue but had a sweet finish. There was a pleasant aftertaste. It gave a little kick which was also enjoyable. I really liked the even flavor of this wine, it was easy to drink and I would definitely drink it again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Terre di Poggio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Laude

Name: Terre di Poggio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Laude
Variety: Montepulciano
Region: Abruzzo
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "This opens with dark aromas of leather, tobacco, cured meat, plum and prune. It shows soft tannins and loads of dark fruit on the finish."
My Review: The wine was a beautiful deep red. It smelled very grape-y, with that plastic component again that I have been noticing in a lot of red wines lately. It was also spicy in its scent. The taste did not have too much tannic activity going on, a light mouthfeel, medium-bodied. It reminded me of Merlot so it was enjoyable for me. There was a dry finish, but it was still quite good. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Sean Minor Pinot Noir Rose Vin Gris

Name: Sean Minor Pinot Noir Rose Vin Gris
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: Carneros, California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "The Vin Gris is a bright and vibrant salmon color with cherry, strawberry, cranberry, and ripe watermelon aromas on the nose. On entry, the wine displays bright strawberry flavors. Throughout the mid-palate and finish, raspberry and cherry fruit characters are balanced with spicy and crisp acidity that linger creating a refreshing and lengthy finish."
My Review: This was my first time trying a pinot noir rose. It had an interesting salmon/orangish color (which I am not used to seeing in roses) with a nice smell, really fruity and sweet with slight hints of pepper. It was also nice on the mouth, with just the right mouthfeel, a light taste that did not have too much alcohol. There was a floral aftertaste, reminding me of rose petals, and not much fruit on the tongue. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Grande Resereve des Bastides Gaillac

Name: Grande Resereve des Bastides Gaillac
Variety: 20% Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Loin de l'Oeil, 30% Mauzac
Region: Gaillac
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $9.95
Shop Review: "A crisp and fruity blend featuring 20% of the herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc, 50% creamy Loin de l'Oeil and notes of fresh apple and crisp pear, plus a touch of herb from the 30% Mauzac. It has a bright feel, with a hint of mineral on the finish."
My Review: This wine was really gold in a color, a dark tinted yellow. It smelled like a watermelon Jolly Rancher or some other type of hard candy or gum. It also had hints of fruits and flowers in its scent. The wine had a refreshing taste with a light mouthfeel. It was not too acidic nor too harsh. There was still a nice kick present, the flavors were good and floral, and there was no stinky aftertaste. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Villa Jolanda Brut

Name: Villa Jolanda Brut
Variety: Brut
Region: N/A
Country: Italy
Year: N/A
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "Brilliant straw color with emerald reflections. Fresh and floral bouquet with a hint of pears, apricots, and bananas. Fresh and inviting with bright fruit and an easy drinking style with a pleasing hint of almonds in the aftertaste."
My Review: Pale golden in color, this bubbly champagne smelled of pears, apricots, and other stone fruits. In fact, there were lots of fruits on the nose; probably more than I could identify. It was a refreshing smell. Upon tasting, initially it was extremely bubbly - I could not taste anything! Then, it had a somewhat stinky, prominent aftertaste of strong potpourri. There were lots of floral notes, which made it feel like I was eating flowers mixed in with some really carbonated club soda. It was pretty good, and felt special to drink, so I would save this one for special events and occasions for sure. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Alvarez de Toledo Godello

Name: Alvarez de Toledo Godello
Variety: Verdelho (Godello)
Region: Bierzo
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95
Shop Review: "Clean pale yellow color. Nose fruity, persistent and elegant aromas. Good backbone on the palate."
My Review: This was my first time trying this type of grape. Its color was very yellow, more than I have ever seen in white wines, which are usually quite pale, straw-like, or golden in color. Quite honestly, this wine's color reminded me of pee. Despite that, it had a nice grapefruit scent, while at the same time smelling like a very sweet, juicy pear. Its aroma was crisp and refreshing. The taste was also crisp, first giving off a light, floral mouthfeel, and then finishing with more pear and grapefruits in a delightful way. I wouldn't mind pairing this wine with fruits and cheese. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Oracle Pinotage

Name: Oracle Pinotage
Variety: Pinotage
Region: N/A
Country: South Africa
Year: 2014
Price: $7.95
Shop Review: "The unusual style of Pinotage with complex aromas of black pepper, smoke, tomato, and dark fruit. The palate is packed with ripe mixed berry flavors, making this unoaked red wine a real crowd pleaser."
My Review: This wine's color was a deep, reddish-brownish kind of color. Simply by looking at it in the glass, it seemed light and airy, and most likely medium-bodied. Upon smelling it, I was introduced to the best-smelling bouquet I have experienced thus far. It smelled delicious, like butter, vanilla, berries, and cream. Its taste was just as delightful. It gave off slight notes of vanilla with a really nice, rounded feel. Although the finish was dry, I really, really enjoyed this wine and I would love to find it again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Monte Degli Angeli Sangiovese

Name: Monte Degli Angeli Sangiovese
Variety: Sangiovese
Region: Puglia
Country: Italy
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95
Shop Review: "The aromas are rich and dark, with lots of black cherry and a hint of balsamic. In the mouth the wine is round and energetic, with cherry and black raspberry fruit complemented by hints of damp earth. If you like Sangiovese-based wines like Chianti or our best-selling Colsanto from Umbria, you'll love this! The wine is ripe, fresh, and fruit-driven with a wonderful dash of earthy complexity at the end. Buy it by the case and drink with pizza, grilled poultry, and pasta."
My Review: This wine was a beautiful deep red. It looked a lot like grape juice. The aroma given off was of plastic and cloves, with a slight reminder of cow manure. Even with such a horrid reminder, it was not a bad smell. The initial taste made me think of berry compote. More of the plastic component came out in the finish, and it had an earthy kind of feel. The finish dry, but the wine was pretty good and I would probably drink it again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Bolla Moscato

Name: Bolla Moscato
Variety: Moscato
Region: Pavia
Country: Italy
Year: N/A
Price: $9.95
Shop Review: "Loaded with juicy exotic fruit, mature apricot, yellow peach and tangerine flavors, this sweet and delightful wine is perfect for Sunday brunch or picnics."
My Review: This Moscato was actually quite yellow rather than gold, with some greenish hues to it. It smelled like some kind of syrup. It also had a sort of car smell, kind of like burnt rubber. The flavor was sweet, but not typical of the Moscatos that I have tried before. It wasn't extremely fruity but still enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.

Wine and Cheese Pairing #1

Our collection of wines and cheeses.

Last week, two of my friends and I got together and experienced our very first wine and cheese pairing. It was an interesting and fun experience that I've always wanted to try. We sampled 3 different wines and 3 different cheeses, unfortunately without much knowledge of what pairs together best. Each of us contributed one bottle and one type of cheese. Our collection included two red wines and a rose.

My initial thoughts were that red wines might go well with spicy, more flavorful cheeses, whereas a rose would pair best with a cheese that's creamy or has white rinds. Even with that knowledge, though, I already had a Merlot sitting around that I hadn't opened yet, so I decided to make that my wine contribution. At the same time I was in the mood to eat some Brie cheese, despite learning that it would probably pair better with a white wine. (Guess I'll save that combination for the next wine and cheese pairing!) My other two friends contributed Cabernet and Rose along with cheddar and pepper jack cheeses.

Close-up of the wines, all purchased from The Vintage Cellar at college-student-friendly prices.

For each combination of wine and cheese, we first tasted the wine by itself, then the cheese by itself, then both of them together. After each tasting we analyzed our thoughts about it.

First up was the Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon. Upon pouring it in the glass, it gave off a dark maroon, brownish color, leaving a numerous amount of fairly long legs along the side of the glass after swirling it. My first whiff of it had a strong alcoholic smell that tingled my nose. It seemed peppery, like spicy cloves. Its flavor was fairly robust and had strong tannins. Surprisingly it had a smooth finish and was not bitter, but it did linger on the tongue in a slightly unpleasant way. We decided to pair this one with the cheddar cheese.

The Cheddar had almost no scent, so it was not stinky (like more cheese) and was bright orange in color. It had sharp flavor, was a little salty, and had the perfect chewy texture. It was delicious on its own.

Together, these two didn't pair very well in our eyes (or mouth, rather). The flavors didn't seem to blend well, they more so created a messy mix of flavors. The presence of the cheese made the wine taste pretty bad - it was more acidic, no yummy elements were brought out, and the pleasant taste of the cheddar was masked. Overall, this wine and cheese clashed with each other. It might have been a result of the somewhat low-quality brands that we chose, but we had indeed heard that Cabernet and Cheddar go together well.

Close-up of the cheeses, which were kind of chosen at random.

Next up we tried the Bricco Del Tati Rose. It had a deep pink color and distinct scent that I can't quite describe. It was both floral and sweet, but I couldn't figure out what types of fruits I was tasting. The scent was also spicy at the same time. This wine had a nice light flavor, perfect to enjoy a warm sunny day. It had an interesting aftertaste and a tangy finish.

We paired this wine with Brie cheese. It smelled a lot like plastic. It was yellowish in color with a white waxy rind coating it. It was soft and very creamy - it easily melted in my mouth. For some reason it tasted like some kind of vegetable, possibly lettuce or a leaf vegetable of some sort. I tried it cold because I wasn't sure if this was the kind of brie that should be heated and drizzled with honey.

When putting these two together, the cheese again made the wine taste stronger and more alcoholic. The rose brought out more of the vegetable flavor in the brie, reminding me of canola oil or Crisco shortening. At this point, I had a realization that I didn't really enjoy wine with cheese, or that we must have gone wrong with our combinations, because this experience wasn't yielding the best results. It was kind of like we were just mashing flavors together that didn't complement each other. But I remain hopeful since it was only our first one and we have yet to learn about better pairings.

All of us at the table!

Our last wine selection was a Canyon Road Merlot. This one was a gorgeous deep, dark red. It didn't have too strong of an aroma, but it did reminded me of pepper and spices. There were also hints of vinegar. The wine showed off short, rather spaced out legs on the side of the glass. It was medium-bodied with an even flavor throughout the mouthfeel, tasting like berries, with a nice smooth finish. I really enjoyed this wine on its own. It was actually recommended to me by an employee at The Vintage Cellar when I was looking for something similar in taste to a wine that I tried during one of our weekly tastings. It was also extremely affordable, so I'm thankful that they were able to introduce it to me!

We paired this merlot with Pepper Jack. It's a white cheese with noticeable specs of red and green peppers throughout. It smelled spicy and delicious. This cheese is extremely flavorful. It does not need anything added to it, it was simply enjoyable by itself. Not too salty and not too overpowering. One of my favorite cheeses!

This was the best combination out of the three. The wine brought out even more of the spiciness in the cheese in a delightful way. I could also taste more berry characteristics from the wine. It gave the merlot a hot finish which was quite good, and together the wine and cheese left behind a hint of spice on the throat. This pairing was just bursting with flavor. It was exciting, powerful, and tasty.

Us opening the cheese and wine. We're getting a hang of using our $6.00 wine opener.

Overall, this wine and cheese pairing was a fun experience. As we develop our palates and learn more about what goes best with what, I'm sure we will get better at it. Though two out of our three pairings weren't very enjoyable to our current tastes, the third one made up for it! We're excited to try again soon, hopefully with more knowledge and expertise.

Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "Loaded with juicy exotic fruit, mature apricot, yellow peach and tangerine flavors, this sweet and delightful wine is perfect for Sunday brunch or picnics."
My Review: Beautifully golden in color, this Moscato smelled deliciously juicy. It smelled of peaches, apricots, nectarine and other stone fruits. Once again I was reminded of a Dole fruit cup. It was perfectly bubbly, sweet, and had slight floral undertones. The flavor was refreshing and young, and I would definitely enjoy this with some seafood. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Paul Laureano Tinto Classico

Name: Paul Laureano Tinto Classico
Variety: Trincadeira, Aragonez, Alfocheiro
Region: Alentejano
Country: Portugal
Year: 2013
Price: $8.95
Shop Review: "Paulo Laureano's Classico is a delicious blend of the native Portuguese varietals Trincadeira (40%), Aragonez (40%), and Alfrocheiro (20%). This is a full bodied red that reveals all that the terroir of Portugal has to offer. Light cigar tobacco and soft leather present beautifully on the nose. Dark, black fruits fill the mouth, but the wine flows smoothly over the palate, with a good bit of spicy on the finish. Pair with spicy, cured meats and hard cheeses."
My Review: This wine had a beautiful deep red/burgundy color. Its scent was savory with notes of butter and oak. It had a delightful first impression on the tongue, with a taste that reminded me of merlot. It was medium-bodied, a perfect balance of grape flavor that was good and even. I would definitely drink this wine again. Was not paired with any food.

Cassis, blueberry, pungent herbs and mocha on the nose. Smooth and open-knit on the palate, displaying fresh cherry and dark berry qualities and a hint of black pepper. Finishes with gripping tannins and good length, leaving a subtle floral note behind."
My Review: The color was a deep purple. Its scent was peppery and plastic-like. It had a spicy flavor with some more plastic notes. It had strong tannins and a hot finish. Didn't really enjoy this wine too much. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Mars and Venus Chardonnay

Name: Mars and Venus Chardonnay
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Central Valley
Country: Chile
Year: N/A
Price: $5.95
Shop Review: "A very nice value Chardonnay that comfortable over-delivers vs. its modest price tag. No oak here, just bushels of clean, crisp, Chardonnay apple and stone fruit with a hint of caramelized pineapple. Juicy and clean, this is a mid-weight white that's just perfect for parties or weeknight sipping."
My Review: This wine was golden, fuller looking, and more glossy against the glass than the previous wine. It didn't have a very nice aroma - it actually kind of smelled like pee. The scent also reminded me of some kind of vegetable. Its taste was strong in acidity, with a neither floral nor fruity flavor. Its taste was very similar to the Pinot Grigio, so it was quite enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.

My Review: Pale straw in color with green undertones, I found the smell of this wine to be fruity and fresh. I could sense grapefruit and guava in its scent, which tingled my nose. It had a cool, refreshing floral flavor with a contradictory stinky aftertaste. Its finish had hints of pineapple and tanginess. I thought this wine was exceptional. Was not paired with any food.

Fancy enough for a special occasion toast, yet sweet-natured enough to enjoy every day, our bright and cheerful sweet wines are sure to capture your heart."
My Review: This wine caught my attention. It was a pale yellow colored Moscato. The scent smelled like plastic, but was also extremely floral. I really enjoyed smelling it - it made me feel as if I were walking through a lush garden in the springtime. When I tasted it, it was instantly sweet on the tongue. The flavor had a really nice mouthfeel and a perfect balance of fruity and floral notes, without being overly sweet. Would definitely drink this wine again! My roommate bought herself a bottle. Variety: Montepulciano
Region: Abruzzo
Country: Italy
Year: 2013

Shop Review: "Lots of leather and dried fruit on this, but immensely enjoyable and held up well over the course of three days. A terrific find."
My Review: This was the first Montepulciano wine that I have ever tried. It had a beautiful deep red color. It looked thick and full-bodied against the sides of the glass. It smelled of grapes and vanilla. Its flavor was nice and easy on the tongue, and a little bland (which I liked). It had an even flavor and an even finish. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine. Tasting - Pirovano Sangiovese Romagna

Name: Pirovano Sangiovese Romagna
Variety: Sangiovese

Country: Italy

My Review: The wine's color was dark burgundy, almost brown. It seemed to have a similar body to a Merlot, medium-looking. It scent had that buttery smell that I've been experiencing with a lot of red wines lately. It gave hints of buttered popcorn and caramel. I really enjoyed this wine's taste. It was light and easy to drink, filled with grape flavors and a slight bit of sweetness, and a dry but tolerable finish. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Entrada Chardonnay

Name: Entrada Chardonnay
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Nancagua
Country: Chile
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95
Shop Review: "Fruity and floral on the nose and rich but not heavy on the palate. Wonderful tropical fruit flavors are balanced by just a touch of French oak to round out the finish."
My Review: This wine had a nice, normal, golden Chardonnay color. It smelled sweet and fruity, very similar to the scent of the previous wine during this tasting. It had an interesting taste, different from the other Chardonnays that I have tried. It was neither floral nor fruity, and it reminded me of graham crackers. Its flavor was almost salty, with a certain zing to it. I'm not sure if I liked this wine, but it was definitely an interesting experience tasting it. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Protocolo White

Name: Protocolo White
Variety: 60% Airen, 40% Macabeo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Price: $6.95
Shop Review: "Pale yellow. High-pitched aromas of lemon zest and white flowers, with a piquant mineral overtone. Dry, racy and focused, offering tangy lemon zest and green apple flavors and a touch of bitter herbs. Closes with good clarity and cut, leaving a tart citrus fruit note behind. This is pretty grown-up for the price, not to mention a superb value."
My Review: Its color was almost clear; it barely had any color to it because it was so pale. Instantly I thought of grapefruit when I smelled its fruity bouquet. It left a little tingle behind in my nose. Its taste was floral, and it had an interesting, weird aftertaste that reminded me of potpourri. Not a fan of this wine. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Crane Lake Riesling

Name: Crane Lake Riesling
Variety: Riesling
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95
Shop Review: "Punchy lime and lemon mark this off-dry Riesling with a staccato rhythm, adding edge to honeyed tones of peach and honeysuckle. Exceptionally priced, it's satisfying and elegant."
My Review: In the bottle, its color was pale yellow. Unfortunately I couldn't assess its smell while in the glass because there was still some red leftover from the previous wine. What I could make it was that it seemed extremely fruity. It hit the tongue with a bang, bringing in tons of sweetness and refreshing notes of florals. This wine was crisp and enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Crane Lake Petite Sirah

Name: Crane Lake Petite Sirah
Variety: Petite Sirah
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $5.95
Shop Review: "Shows a certain rustic simplicity now, with youthfully jammy flavors of blackberries, cherries and currants, sprinkled with cocoa and pepper and wrapped into dusty tannins."
My Review: Compared to the other reds during this tasting, the Petite Sirah was more purple-y reddish in color. It smelled warm and full-bodied. Its taste definitely agreed with its scent, because it was hearty in flavor, with hints of vanilla in the background. It was good, but also dry. There was no aftertaste which I liked. Overall, this wine was pretty good. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Yellowtail Reserve Merlot

Name: Yellowtail Reserve Merlot
Variety: Merlot
Region: South Eastern
Country: Australia
Year: 2010
Price: $12.00
Shop Review: "Round, velvety and mouthfilling, this is a satisfying Merlot at a bargain price. Aromas of black cherries and herbs fold in hints of cinnamon and mocha, while the flavors are generally fruity, but with a slightly tomatoey note. Soft on the finish. Drink now."
My Review: The Merlot was almost brown, a very burgundy-looking red. It smelled good, a grape-y scent of medium body. It tasted like fresh grapes, like a red grape smoothie that I had in a restaurant in the Philippines once. It was not bitter, it was not acidic, and I really liked it. I might buy a bottle of this for myself sometime or ask a salesman to direct me towards other similar flavors. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Takutai Pinot Gris

Name: Takutai Pinot Gris
Variety: Pinot Gris
Region: Nelson
Country: New Zealand
Year: 2009
Price: $21.00
Shop Review: "Since this wine weights in at 14%, the fruit was clearly very ripe. That ripeness is reflected in the flavors as well, which feature nectarine and honey accented by hints of white pepper. It's full bodied and lush, with a long finish that mingles the sensations of sweet and spicy."
My Review: The color of this wine was even more golden-looking than the last one. It kind of reminded me of pee. It had a strong pear scent, with hints of pineapple and other Dole fruit cup fruits. I really enjoyed the smell of it. It also tasted good, it was both floral and sweet. Would probably drink this wine again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Mars & Venus Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Mars & Venus Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2013
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "Citrus and gooseberry aromas are mild but typical of the variety. A basic citrus palate delivers modest tangerine and nectarine flavors which lead to a mild, pithy finish showing light citric notes."
My Review: This wine had a prominent golden color. It smelled fruity, entering my nose with a kick of something sweet that I couldn't quite detect. It was almost as if I was smelling something savory as well in its scent. I thought it tasted great, and I think this is the first Sauvignon Blanc that I actually enjoyed. It was sweet and nice on the tongue. Would definitely drink this wine again! Was not paired with any food.

Dinner - Bull and Bones (USA)

For my final wine and dinner experience, my roommate and I decided to try Bull and Bones Brewhaus and Grill, a newer establishment in Blacksburg located on South Main Street. I had dined there once before, but it was before I turned 21 so I was not able to enjoy the amazing selection of beers or wines quite yet. That's what made this experience different - I realized what a delicious combination it is to pair a great wine with a juicy steak!

We decided to go with two reds and one white wine to accompany our meals that evening. The first red was called The Show Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena winery in Napa Valley, California. It displayed a very dark reddish maroon color in the glass. After swirling it around, releasing its bouquet of scents, I could sense a really nice smell of grapes mixed in with alcohol. When I tasted it, it was oaky and reminded me a little bit of plastic. This wine is full bodied and dense, with an intense grape taste that seems a little bit overwhelming. I wasn't quite a fan of this wine on its own. Although, when I paired it with one of Bull and Bones's most popular dishes, rosemary and garlic cream sauce Tri-Tip medallions, it tasted a lot better. More grape flavor was brought out and the mouthfeel was less dense, making it more enjoyable for me. It went well with the spicy, peppery taste of the steak. I thought it was a great pair!

The next red wine we chose was a Fat Cat Merlot, also from Napa Valley. This red had more of a ruby color that sparkled like a gem in the glass. It smelled buttery to me, that savory smell that I've been experiencing with a lot of red wines that I've tasted lately. Its scent also seemed cool and fresh, something I wouldn't expect from a red wine. The Merlot was medium bodied and light on the tongue. It tasted really good! It was almost sweet, not quite like a Riesling or Moscato, but sweet for a red, with notes of fruits and berries. I really loved this wine. It even went well with the 8oz. Sirloin that I paired it with. The spices from the steak were really brought out by the wine. The combination also increased the flavor of the wine, making it seem bigger and even more delicious.

Lastly, our white wine was a Chateau St. Michelle Riesling from Columbia Valley in Washington. It was golden in color and had a scent that made me think of pears, guava, grapefruit, and stone fruits such as peaches and apricots. It was citrusy with a crisp apple taste, really nice on the mouth. There was no aftertaste which I enjoyed, so I can see myself drinking this wine again. I paired this one with the Steak & Shrimp Pasta, garlic cream sauce covered fettuccine topped with sauteed shrimp and wood-fired tri-tip steak. This was another great combination. Having these together brought out fresh oceanic flavors from the seafood. There was white wine in the pasta sauce already, which went perfectly with the Riesling. All in all, these flavors really complimented each other and worked well together. White wine with seafood is always a great way to go!

Sadly, we were too into taking notes on the wine and hungry at the time that we forgot to take photos of our plates before we devoured them. Here are the only pictures of our food that I was able to capture - the last bite of the sirloin and our yummy dessert.

I really enjoyed doing these wine and dinner pairings. Even though I'll no longer be receiving credit for them, I plan on continuing this tradition for a long time. Learning about all the wines we discuss for this class helps me gain a better understanding of what will pair well together when it comes to food, and I am thankful for the course to teach me that! Maybe I'll even continue writing in this blog about my experiences. Who knows!

Tasting - Opera Prima Pink Moscato

Name: Opera Prima Pink Moscato
Variety: 97% Muscat and 3% Tempranillo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: N/A
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "A blend of Muscat 97% and Tempranillo 3%. This fine sparkling presents an intense aroma of fresh berries and tropical fruits with hints of white flower petals. Delicate bubbles caress the palate offering a silky and pleasant sweetness well balanced by a crisp, refreshing finish. Ideal on its own, as an aperitif or with all types of sweets and desserts. Serve it very cold, between 7 and 9 degrees."
My Review: As soon as the wine was poured in my glass, it looked delightfully bubbly. It smelled strongly of flowers, kind of like potpourri. At the same time it reminded me of pink lemonade and summertime. It was really nice on the tongue, light and refreshingly sweet, delicious. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Cortenova Primitivo

Name: Cortenova Primitivo
Variety: Primitivo
Region: Puglia
Country: Italy
Year: 2012
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "Dark, ruby-red color with violent highlights. Intense and fragrant bouquet with a rich array of red and black fruit aromas and flavors. Harmonious and velvety on the palate. Great balance and structure. 100% Zinfandel."
My Review: The color was more brown-looking than usual, more burgundy than red. It smelled of berries and buttery goodness. The smell also reminded me of vanilla and oak. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine's scent. It tasted interesting, almost spicy like pepper but reminding me of plastic at the same time. I could drink this wine again. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Riebeek Cellars Shiraz

Name: Riebeek Cellars Shiraz
Variety: Shiraz
Region: Swartland
Country: South Africa
Year: 2013
Price: $12.00
Shop Review: "Often referred to as Shiraz Country, the Riebeek Valley is renowned for exceptional Shiraz wines. The Riebeek Shiraz is a lively rich wine, full bodied with a subdued smokiness on the nose and a pallet of ripe fruit and interesting spice."
My Review: This Shiraz smelled wonderful to me. It was deep purple in color and seemed like it would be medium-bodied. It tasted like it had a strong alcohol content; I could not identify any berries, fruitiness, or savory sensations. Overall though, it was a decent tasting wine. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Petrucco Ribolla Gialla

Name: Petrucco Ribolla Gialla
Variety: 100% Ribolla Gialla
Region: Friuli
Country: Italy
Year: 2009
Price: $21.00
Shop Review: "This well-priced Friulano would pair nicely with spicy Indian or Thai food thanks to the creaminess and richness of its mouthfeel. In addition, the wine offers a solid bouquet of peach and melon that would not compete with fragrant ingredients. 100% Ribolla Gialla."
My Review: This wine smelled very citrus-y. Unfortunately I tasted it just after a red wine was in my glass so I could not make out its scent very well. I was also unable to assess its color. From what I could detect in its taste, it was acidic and strong, leaving a burning sensation at the back of my throat. It was also kind of sour. It tasted okay, but this wine was not my favorite. Was not paired with any food.

Tasting - Le Jade Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Le Jade Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Languedoc
Country: France
Year: 2013
Price: $10.00
Shop Review: "Silvery straw color. Lively aromas and flavors of pineapple, yellow apple, melon, and Meyer lemon with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, complex, medium-long finish with notes of lemongrass, pear, and lemon with no tannins and no oak. Bright and crisp with layers of juicy pineapple, pear, lemongrass and ripe melon make this perfect for repeated sipping or enhancing fresh farm to table cookery."
My Review: When I smelled this pale straw-colored wine, it smelled full and dense, leaving behind a mark on my nose. Its scent had a fruity and floral combo. Despite the heaviness of the smell, the taste had a light mouthfeel, but it was not a nice one for me. It left behind a weird taste at the back of my mouth that I didn't really enjoy. This wine didn't do much for me. Was not paired with any food.

Dinner - Palisades (France)

This was my second visit to The Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston, Virginia for their "Wines Around The World" series. Tonight's menu was inspired by France, a country that's famous for their food and wines. The drive was more enjoyable this time because it was still light out, and my roommate and I got to see some spectacular mountain views along the way.
First up on the wine list was Gascogne San de Guilhem, a white wine to be paired with French mussels. The wine was a pale yellow with a zesty, fruit scent. Something peculiar tickled my nose...it almost smelled like gasoline to me. When I tasted it, it was dry at first, but I actually enjoyed the aftertaste. I could detect some floral notes. I thought this wine was okay; it was an interesting experience tasting it. When paired with the mussels that were cooked in white wine, parsley, and shallots, the Gascogne tasted ten times better. It was sweeter and went well with the oceanic taste of the seafood. These two paired deliciously together.

The next wine was a varietal Merlot/Cabernet Domaine de Courteillac. It had a deep red color and thickly coated legs around the glass. I sensed a hint of fruitiness in its scent, but also some oak. Overall, though, the wine honestly smelled like paint to me. It tasted woody, slightly peppery, and seemed to have a high alcohol content. This wine was not for me. Paired with the Hachis Parmentier, France's take on a Shepherd's Pie, I think the wine tasted even worse. It reminded me even more of paint and in a way interfered with the taste of the food, which was really good on its own.

Lastly, we tried a Ventoux Famille Perrin. This red wine was a ruby, candied color. I loved the smell of it - for some reason it smelled like something savory. After several sniffs I felt like I smelled something salty. It just had a really, really nice nose. Then when I tasted it, I couldn't believe that I was tasting buttered popcorn! It took me awhile to figure it out, but that was the saltiness that I was detecting. This wine was light and lifted, and I enjoyed drinking it. I could not make out any fruitiness in its taste, though. We paired this one with Alsatian Pizza, topped with creme fraiche, caramelized onion, and bacon. Tasting them together really didn't change much about the wine for me. It had the same intensity of flavor, and it was still good wine, but I wouldn't say it was the best combination. I preferred the food and wine separately.
Another great dinner experience in the books! Not sure when I'll be back to this restaurant, but I would highly recommend it to others. Someday I plan on returning and trying items from their regular menu. The staff is so kind and the restaurant's ambiance is great. My roommate and I even purchased a bottle of our favorite wine from last week!

Tasting - Coastal Vines White Zinfandel

Name: Coastal Vines White Zinfandel
Variety: Zinfandel, Merlot, Muscat, Grenache, Mixed Varietals
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $6.95
Shop Review: "This White Zinfandel has a beautiful pink salmon color and crisp acidity. The wine shows juicy fruit flavors of strawberry and cherry, with a tangy sweet finish. Pairs well with mild cheeses, crab cakes, and spicy Asian cuisine."
My Review: Blush-colored, with a strawberry scent, this wine was very sweet - but it was not overkill. The taste reminded me of candy or even marshmallows. It had a nice, youthful flavor and even finish. It was quite enjoyable. Was not paired with any food.
